Join the Costa Coffee Club, earn points and get rewarded for drinking your regular morning cuppa!

Costa Coffee recently revamped its ‘Coffee Club’ loyalty scheme and has made it more streamlined and easier to earn points that convert to rewards. Essentially, like many other loyalty card schemes, it’s a free, card-based reward programme, with the added benefit of an online accounts management feature. Points are earned with every purchase of food, hot beverages (and other drinks) and merchandising products both in-store and online.

The key points of this scheme are 5 points for every £1 spent, with every point being worth 1 penny in rewards. When you’ve collected enough points, you can redeem them against your selected food or drink for free. For example, 400 points = £4.00 and you may only redeem points against purchases made in participating Costa stores. This means any coffee, tea, hot chocolate or cold beverage, soft drinks, savoury food, cakes, or snacks (excludes alcohol). There is a registration bonus when your card is registered online. Costa Coffee also has a great newsletter linked to its loyalty scheme where users are eligible for prizes, exclusive deals and other great promotions.

“At Costa we pride ourselves on offering our customers the very best coffee, food, and service experience. We are now confident that the Coffee Club also offers customers the best, most flexible rewards programme available.” Kevin Hydes, Head of UK Marketing at Costa Coffee.

The new Coffee Club card is purely points based, similar to other current high street schemes,  which replaces the prepay Costa Card which has been available at Costa for the last three years (pre 2010). From March 4th 2011 all original Costa Cards will automatically become Coffee Club Cards and will no longer need to be topped up with money. Any outstanding balance will need to be spent within twelve months.

Costa doesn’t charge for card replacement and can credit or carry-over points to new cards, however, they may charge for replacement cards for multiple requests within a 6 month period. Cards do not have an expiry date.

As I travel up to Wales very often to visit my family, I always stop at Taunton Dean for coffee and also on the return trip. The wife and I buy Costa coffee because we enjoy it and always look forward to a nice brew!

  • John Chesterfield says:

I suggest that everyone goes to another coffee merchant. Why? Well until today I had accumulated 820 Coffee Club points which meant I had spent at least £145 in various establishments of Costa.

Today, for the first time, I bought £2.45 worth of drink and food – not much – but nonetheless Costa got the benefit of my spending. BUT Costa took 245 points from me for that single transaction. Greedy Costa – I should say so. 245 points is equal to a spend of £49.00!

  • Susan says:

I love to meet friends for my Costa coffee!

  • Dan C says:

John – Costa also only gives credit for whole pounds spent, which makes a specialty latte at £2.95 only a 10p return, rather than 14p (and a bit)… Greedy indeed!
Nero, on the other hand, give a stamp for every drink purchased, and a free drink after nine stamps, and one would have to do something pretty silly (such as buy nine £3.50 speciality lattes, and use the stamp for a single espresso) to hit the same 20p/1p rate…
Though, let’s be fair, if one is going to drink in Costa anyway then any reward is better than nothing. Gift horses, and all that.
